Chrysler had faithfully adhered to a rigid plan for Jeep since the beginning. Conveniences could be added and new customers could be targeted, but any 4-wheeled object wearing the name "Jeep" had better pay homage to its ancestors and drive like it was built for soldiers. The new-for-02 Liberty was the first slackening of this law. Replacing the long-running Cherokee, it also replaced that SUV's unfriendly ride and seats, quieted things down, adopted car-like steering gear, and wore Jeep's first independent front suspension in decades. And what happened to all those hard Cherokee edges? Surprise surprise, the new Jeep was completely conventional.Welp, that lasted all of three years. For 2005, Jeep steered its former conformer back off the beaten path with the Liberty CRD, which stands for Common Rail Diesel. Cue Joe Consumer: "Diesel?? The ear-splitting, smoke-spewing, cancer-causing parody on the internal combustion engine that captured all of one-half of one percent of America's passenger car market the year prior? What were they thinking?"Well Joe, they seem to have been thinking the same thing as several thousand paying customers that year. People were pretty sick of paying for gas even by then, and the Liberty CRD stood as a rare alternative. Considering how far diesel technology has come in the two decades since their last wave of popularity (and the growing obsolescence of the aforementioned stereotypes), it also stands as a legitimate one.
