2005 Toyota Tundra SR5 Review

The Corolla did it to economy cars, the Camry did it to family cars, and the Prius is doing it to hybrids right now. By "it" I am referring to the nasty Toyota habit of rolling into a market segment as the congenial, anonymous-looking new guy and, somehow, ending up owning the place.

But every rule has its exceptions, and one obvious slip was Toyota's T100 truck, which in 1993 asked customers bent on bigness to go small, asked V8 loyalists to settle for six, asked anti-import patriots to buy Japanese, and asked them to pay extra for it, too. The buying public's responses were NO, NO, NO, and NO, respectively.

But these guys didn't get where they are today by repeating mistakes. Ever heard of "kaizen"? It means continuous improvement, and Toyota means it dearly. When the Tundra replaced the T100 in 2000, it arrived with all dimensions upsized, class-leading V8 in hand, and hatched at a new plant in Indiana, which doesn't sound much like Tokyo to us.

And they're not waiting for the redesign to bake in critical updates. Last year the Tundra sprouted a new extended-length Double Cab variant, and for 2005 all engines and transmissions receive technology upgrades to keep current. And even these are nothing compared to the next Tundra, anticipated for 2007. Trucks remain one domain elusive of Toyota's domination, but dedication like this makes you wonder if it's only a matter of time.
