You have to admit, the whole SUV-as-off-road-warrior façade was cute for a while. The ability to go anywhere seemed to sell these things on its own, up until people came to terms with their real-world needs and migrated to car-based SUVs that tremble in their strut-suspended wheels at the thought of leaving the pavement. These days, as long you look like you can go off-road, you're good.The thing about Jeeps is, they always could. They had the hardware, they had the know-how; heck, there was even a time when people called any tall wagon a "Jeep," back before someone came up with "SUV." Jeeps stood by our side during World War II, and look who won that little quarrel. Seeing as how the brand's allure rests on this history of prowess, any shift in its design philosophy might be risky.But here comes the third-generation Grand Cherokee wearing its first new suit since its days as a cast member of deceased company American Motors. Sure, it's still a tough-looking truckster with a 4-wheel-drive system (three of them, actually), but underneath its larger, squared-off new body is a host of more street-friendly changes that were formerly antithetical to the Jeep brand.
